Tomy’s Collection series data

Filed under: Tomytec — redracer @ 9:19 PM

As you can see, today I have been adding the details of some of the Collection series that I just had stored as text-based data. This is on top of the vehicle & figure Collection data that is in Excel format (from the previous Yahoo! group database. I converted the Excel file to a table for the ‘My Home Town’ post, but it is difficult to fit on the page without overlapping the ‘widgets’ column on the right – WordPress doesn’t seem to be clever enough sometime to work this out automatically. Because of this I actually changed the theme recently to one that had a larger data column width.

I am not sure which is the best way to present all this data, and I would like to be able to add pictures of each of the items too at a later stage – thoughts anyone ?

Tomytec ‘Machinami Collection’

Filed under: The Machinami Collection,Tomytec — redracer @ 9:21 PM
Tomytec (a division of Tomy) started releasing a series of traditional buildings, called the ‘Machinami Collection’ in March 2004, and it seems to be an ongoing series, even though as of 2007 they seemed to have stopped making new buildings and keep re-releasing older ones in different colour schemes. ‘Machinami’ means a row of shops of houses along a street. Each of the series so far has 6 different buildings in it, with 2 colour variations, for a total of 12 different items. Usually the 12 are packaged in one carton, so if you buy a carton, you will get the full variety. The items are actually designed to be sold separately, and the contents cannot be seen until you open the box, so it is random which item you get (like trading cards !!!). However the recent re-coloured re-releases have been sold separately so you can choose and get the one you want.

    Tomytec ‘People Collection’

Filed under: The People Collection,Tomytec — redracer @ 8:55 PM
Starting in 2006 was the ‘People Collection’, which were sets of figures (usually 12) in various poses. Most of these came out at the same time to compliment one of the buildings series releases. Whilst the detail quality is not as good as Kato’s figure sets (which are re-painted sets from Preiser), they are a lot cheaper, and are good to fill streets and areas where they will not get close inspection.

    • Mar 2007 – series 4/5/6 – Factory workers – as above

    Tomytec ‘Diorama Collection’

Filed under: The Diorama Collection,Tomytec — redracer @ 8:51 PM
Starting in 2006 was the ‘Diorama Collection’, which were buildings on a base with walls, outbuildings and other accessories. In all cases you got the building(s) that was on the packaging – there were no secret or random items. Many of these have been re-released in different colours. I have used the ‘series’ numbers arbitrarily, as I don’t see these listed on any of the packaging, so I have grouped together similar items that came out at the same time.
    • Oct 2006 – series 1 – Farmhouse A with thatched roof
    • Oct 2006 – series 1 – Farmhouse B with metal roof

    Takara

Filed under: Takara — redracer @ 11:41 PM

As part of the Tomy empire, this series was only released in convenience stores in February 2004, and consisted of a square block of plastic with nice upper floor details but the ground floor was reproduced using colourful stickers. Even though they were 3 & 4 storey buildings with apartments on top of ground floor shops, the size was smaller than N scale, but they could be used in the background to simulate perspective. There were 5 types of buildings with 2 variations of each, and the series consisted of stores like a fish shop, barber, dry cleaner, sweets shop, bar & stationery. One building came with a battery operated interior lighting kit, and the others included details so you could order more of these if you wanted them.

Apparently in July 2004 another series was released which included a 7/11 store and other shops. I have not seen these at all 😦

I will add photos of these shortly …

    Happinet Robin

Filed under: Happinet Robin — redracer @ 11:39 PM

In April 2004, this strange sounding company produced a series of Showa era buildings, which consisted of 4 trams (2 x Toden 6000 series + 2x Enoden 600 series), 3 buildings (one type being a post office & a barber, and another type being an electrical appliance store) & a different secret building.

In August 2004 another series was released, this time with 2 different coloured Toden 6000 trams and 2 Hanshin trams, as well as 3 more shops (one of which was the same type as the secret version in the first series !!!!

I will add photos of these shortly …

    Bandai ‘My Home Town’

Filed under: Bandai,My Home Town — redracer @ 10:33 PM

This company has produced a range of buildings to go with their ‘shorty’ range of train models. They are theoretically advertised as ‘N’ scale, but appear smaller when place with buildings from other manufacturers. The style is an older, often wooden, type of building, and the series is called ‘My Home Town’. Each series has had 12 different buildings (sometimes the same type but different colours) except for series 1, which had 6 buildings and 12 buses in 2 types. They are made from cast plaster (I think !) and look like they are hand painted. Each item usually comes with some sort of accessory – figures, street lamp or electricity pole etc. This series started in 2003 and so far there have been  …

    • November 2003 – series 1 (Itchome) – contained the following … electric appliance shop, mom-and-pop candy store, back-street factory, tenement house, vacant lot, and two halves of a public bath house. Alos included were old style buses of Tokyo City, Tokyu Railway, Keisei Railway, Odakyu Railway, Nagoya City & Osaka City.
    • March 2004 – series 2 (Nichome) – contained the following … coffee shop, wooden apartment building, Chinese restaurant, barber, two halves of a movie theatre, stationery shop, electrical appliance shop, back-street factory, unoccupied land & 2 different coloured tenement houses.
    • July 2004 – series 3 (Sanchome) – contained the following … two halves of a school hall, physical education warehouse, unoccupied land, school small set A (with delivery tricycle), school small set B (with car), model shop, bookstore, post office and mortar apartment.
    • October 2004 – series 4 (Yonchome) – contained the following … mostly small stores & restaurants (including 2 corner shops), as well as a police box with 2 ‘mini’ police cars.

Since Tomytec started their many cheap plastic ‘Collection’ series, Bandai seem to have stopped their efforts in this area. Unfortunately, because of the way the hobby distribution system works, these items were not often carried by the ‘strict’ model train dealers, and therefore were hard to locate and purchase. Also once they were sold out, they have not been re-run, and cannot be ordered again.

I am not happy with the way the tables are currently displayed, so this may change in the future 🙂
